The National Center for Interpretation LLC was born out of the pioneering work in interpreter testing and training undertaken by the University of Arizona and continues the university's commitment to innovation of the highest quality. We have licensed the training materials developed and validated by the university, and will be providing the same level of professional development.
NCI's Past
The National Center for Interpretation was founded in 1979 at the University of Arizona to ensure language access for limited-English speakers across the country. In support of that mission, NCI developed three areas of focus: Training, Testing, and Research.
NCI became a national leader in interpreter certification testing—developing the Federal Court Interpreter Certification Examination, which set the standard for all subsequent interpreter tests in the field.
NCI pioneered training programs, including the Court Interpreter Training Institute, launched in 1983.
NCI's founder, Dr. Roseann Gonzalez, was the primary author of the seminal text in the field, Fundamentals of Court Interpretation: Theory, Policy, and Practice. Over the years, NCI has also conducted groundbreaking research supported by the AOUSC, U.S. Department of Education, the States of Texas and New Mexico, and other agencies.
NCI's Present
The National Center for Interpretation LLC began in late 2025. NCI LLC now holds the exclusive license to provide the professional development training originally developed at the University of Arizona. We're focusing on what we do best: making interpreters better.
NCI works with an extraordinary group of interpreting/translation subject matter experts, all of whom have years of experience and have achieved the highest credentials in their fields, both in terms of their certifications as well as other relevant degrees (e.g., JD, MD, PhD). As important, they are exceptional teachers who are committed to advancing the profession by elevating the next generation.
About Paul
Paul Gatto founded the National Center for Interpretation LLC in late 2025 following the closure of the department by the University. He was an integral part of NCI from 2000-2025 and served as Assistant Director since 2012. He led or contributed to dozens of special projects focused on interpreter training, testing, and language policy, ranging from complex, multiyear grant- or contract-funded efforts to overseeing all of NCI's training initiatives. Under his leadership, NCI transitioned to primarily online training starting in 2017, tripling the number of webinars offered and expanding enrollments by over 800%. He also led CITI's transition from traditional onsite delivery to the fully online program that has been in place since 2020. It was important to him to ensure that the quality and innovation that NCI's work has been known for was met or exceeded for each and every project. This commitment continues with this new venture, National Center for Interpretation LLC.
